5 pounds – 100th Anniversary of the Titanic
Series: United Kingdom – Commemorative 5 pound coins
As the official commemorator of major British events, The Royal Mint is proud to produce a limited edition of just 7,500 Silver Proof £5 coins to mark the 100th anniversary of Titanic’s fateful voyage. Enduring public interest in this event makes it a superb acquisition for collectors of silver coins, historical coins or anyone looking for a tasteful memento of the maritime legend.
On 10 April 1912 RMS Titanic, the largest passenger steamship in the world, set sail from Southampton bound for New York. Tragically, after just four days, the luxury liner hit the infamous iceberg and sank, causing 1,517 souls to perish. Interest in the event and the stories of the passengers has never waned; a century later, this magnificent ship still enthralls us and stirs our emotions.
The reverse of the £5 Silver Proof coin has been designed by Royal Mint engraver Lee Robert Jones, features a highly accurate depiction of the magnificent vessel as she sails from Southampton. Behind Titanic is the silhouette of ‘Thane’, the memorial statue carved by Sir Thomas Brock, which was erected in Belfast in 1920. The contrast of the proud ship sailing out to sea and the ghostly figure suggesting the fate that awaits dramatically captures the essence of the story.
The obverse shows the timeless portrait of The Queen by Ian Rank-Broadley FRBS and indicates that the coin is issued under the authority of the Channel Island of Alderney.
As befits such an important coin, the Titanic Silver Proof Coin is supplied in an elegant black presentation case. A Certificate of Authenticity is included to guarantee the provenance and precious metal content of this elegant commemorative coin, a superb collectable legacy piece.
