5 euro – The Imperial Eagle
Series: Portugal – Endangered Fauna Species
The Threatened Species series, a series of collector coins created by the Portuguese Mint with the aim of promoting knowledge and preservation of national animal and plant species that are at risk, features the issue of a coin, created by André Carrilho, dedicated to the Iberian Imperial Eagle (Aquila adalberti), a rare bird of prey listed as critically endangered - there are currently only 11 breeding pairs nesting in the Portuguese territory.
Part of the revenue from this coin will be channelled into an environmental fund selected by the Institute for the Conservation of Nature and Forests.
