5 euro – Population ― Housing Census
Population censuses enable the collection of statistical information on the size, characteristics (demographic and other) and composition of a nation’s people, a valuable guide for effective economic and social policy-making. The census has been called “the greatest peacetime operation by the State”. The Greek census is held regularly every 10 years by the Hellenic Statistical Authority (ELSTAT). The 2021 Population - Housing Census is a landmark event, as it coincides with the bicentennial of the Greek War of Independence. In fact, the first census of the population of the modern Greek state was conducted in 1828 under the Governorship of Ioannis Kapodistrias and recorded 753,400 inhabitants nationwide. According to the census of 2011, the permanent population of Greece was 10,816,286.
