3,000 forint – 150th Anniversary of the Issue of Imre Madách: The Tragedy of Man
Series: Hungary – Silver forint coins
The most famous work of Imre Madach, "The Tragedy of Man" has been published 150 years ago
The precise dates when this dramatic poem was composed are known, as Madach himselft noted on the manuscript: started on 17 Feb 1859, finished on 26 March 1860. After the judgement of the Tragedy by Janos Arany, the Kisfaludy Association published the work as initial complimentary copy to their supporters first at 12 January 1862, however the printing had been completed by the end of 1861. (Therefore the complimentary copy has 1861 on the cover page.) Since its publication, The Tragedy of Man has become iconic piece of the Hungarian play-writing.
The silver collector coin was designed by Enikő Szöllőssy. She depicted the figures of Adam and Eve, while Lucifer arises behind them. The figures are placed on the Earth, on which the title of the work can be read. The obverse shows the portrait of the author, Imre Madach.
The figures of Adam and Eve, and the title of the drama are specially overpolished on the relief.
