20 euro – South Railways Vienna-Triest
Series: Austria – Austrian Railways
The new € 20 silver coin shows the locomotive "Steinbrück" with one of the characteristic viaducts of the Semmering Railway in the background. The engine "Steinbrück" still exists in the Technical Museum in Vienna. It is the oldest surviving locomotive to have been built in Austria. It was constructed in 1848 for the South Railway and was in service south of the mountains on the line from Mürzzuschlag to Cilli (today in Slovenia). The reverse of the coin shows the harbour city of Trieste with the locomotive Type 17c372 emerging from the glassed-in gallery on the viaduct leading out of the railway station and yards on it way north to Vienna. In the background are sailing ships at anchor – soon to be replaced by steam.
