Angra do Heroísmo is unique in the world. Raised to city by King John III in 1534, its present urban mesh keeps the original design of the settlement. Standing in the middle of the Atlantic the city was a bridge between the Old and the New World. This vocation is clearly visible in the architectonic profile that Angra shows today: all the elements of a European city live in it in harmony with the ingredients of the colonial cities that Portugal scattered overseas. Recognizing Angra’s matchless beauty and significance UNESCO classified the historical centre of Angra do Heroísmo as World Heritage in 1983. Through the minting of a commemorative collector coin dedicated to the “Historical Centre of Angra do Heroísmo”, the INCM, proceeds on the series devoted to the World Heritages classified by UNESCO in Portugal This 5-euro coin, a design of Álvaro França, minted in silver with proof finish and packaged in a case together with a numbered certificate of guarantee , is limited to 15.000 pieces.
