5 euro - 100 Years Of The Armistice
Series: Portugal - Commemorative 5 euro coins
The 11th of November 1918 marked the armistice that put an end to the 1st World War, a four year conflict involving around 30 countries, mobilizing approximately 50 million soldiers on all of its fronts. Portugal sent around 160 thousand soldiers to this conflict, who fought for the Allies.
To mark this historical milestone, the Portuguese Mint has minted a commemorative coin designed by sculptor José Aurélio, featuring a representation of a red poppy as a symbol of rebirth and a homage to the lives that fell on the battlefields.
