After Slovenia, France will hold the rotating presidency of the Council of the European Union, on the 1st of January 2022. On this occasion, Monnaie de Paris is editing this 20€ silver coin, celebrating this event. Thirteen years after its last presidency, France will lead the Council of the European Union for six months. As a representative of the Union member states, the Council amends the Commission's legislative proposals, in a codecision procedure with the European Parliament. Therefore, on behalf of the 27 member states, France will preside over one of the seven most important European institutions. With an increasing number of countries being part of the European Union (from 6 to 27) and challenges growing in complexication, the exercise of the Presidency is becoming rare, which is all the more significant for the country.
