10 euro - The Europa Program - Enlargement of the European Union
Series: Spain - European Silver Programme
In 2004 the European Union underwent the greatest expansion in its history both in scope and in diversity. On the occasion of this unprecedented event the Mints of France, Holland, Belgium, Austria, Portugal and Spain joined together in a common numismatic program, named the Europa Program. Under this program each of the Mints would release a silver coin featuring a common logo. In addition, the Spanish Royal Mint struck a gold coin to welcome the new countries into the E.U. The obverse portrays H.M. King Juan Carlos I, while on the reverse is depicted a map of Europe with the names of the new nations that have joined the European Union: Estonia, Latvia, Poland, Hungary, Czech Republic, Lithuania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Malta, and Cyprus.
