10 euro - European Architecture: Georges Pompidou Centre
Series: France - European Silver Programme
This year, the Europa Star series is commemorating Great European Architectural Works. Within the context of this common programme, Monnaie de Paris has created a collection representing the Georges Pompidou Centre, inaugurated in 1977; an undisputed symbol of contemporary French architecture in the world. The Centre was created at the behest of Georges Pompidou, who was President of the French Republic at that time, in order to provide the centre of Paris with a distinctive cultural institution devoted to modernist, contemporary creativity and where Visual Art lives alongside books, design, music and cinema. This collector’s coin has been designed by the original architects of the Georges Pompidou Centre, Renzo Piano and Richard Rogers. The obverse shows an original sketch of the Georges Pompidou Centre. The reverse shows an architectural detail of the building.
