Everyone who thinks of Willemstad on Curaçao, immediately imagines the colorful buildings at the St. Anna Bay. Willemstad is indeed known for the colorful ‘Dutch’ architecture, but when you get to know the city a little better, you will come to discover the Spanish and Portuguese influences. This mix of different cultures and influence made sure that in 1997, several of the city’s districts were being listed as UNESCO World Heritage. This is also the reason that the Royal Dutch Mint, on behalf of the Ministry of Finance, will strike a commemorative coin: the Willemstad 10 Euro coin.

Willemstad is de hoofdstad van Curaçao, maar ook de voormalige hoofdstad van de Nederlandse Antillen. De Spanjaarden kenden het eiland al voor 1500, maar vestigden zich er officieel in 1527. In 1634 werd een handelspost aan de Sint Annabaai veroverd door de West-Indische Compagnie (WIC). Jarenlang was Willemstad in Nederlandse handen, maar ook enkele jaren onder Engels beheer. Sinds 2010 is Curaçao een zelfstandig land binnen het Koninkrijk der Nederlanden. Sinds 1997 behoren de historische wijken Punda, Otrobanda, Scharloo en Pietermaai tot het UNESCO Werelderfgoed. Willemstad hoort hiermee tot een kleine groep van World Heritage Cities die vanwege hun universele cultuurhistorische waarde als monumenten worden gezien. De unieke ligging van de wijken rondom het water benadrukken waarom Willemstad zich onderscheidt als havenstad. Daarnaast profileert Willemstad zich nog altijd als historisch herkenbare stad. Het Willemstad Vijfje is alweer de tiende herdenkingsmunt die wordt uitgegeven in de serie UNESCO Werelderfgoed. Sinds 2012 hebben heel wat bijzondere onderwerpen de revue gepasseerd.
