Tribute paid to the French museums' most beautiful pieces of art
Monna Lisa, the most famous artwork of Leonardo da Vinci
Monnaie de Paris pays tribute to the major masterpieces of French museums.
The obverse shows the famous masterpiece of Leonardo da Vinci. The portrait of Mona Lisa is entirely reinterpreted with origin colors. Mona Lisa wears a dark green dress in silk with yellow sleeves. She seems to keep watching the spectator also when he walks around the room because her line of sights is perpendicular to the plane of the image. This portrait is surrounded by a silver frame as the original one is. This denomination will be in rectangular shape, like the painting.
The reverse is also in rectangular shape. It includes the common reverse of the series which shows a mix of some French major museums. The portrait of Leonardo da Vinci stands on the left hand side with a compass, symbol of precision. Two main works of da Vinci are displayed alongside: the flying machine and the Vitruvian Man. Drawn around 1490, the Vitruvian Man represents the human body proportions according to the roman architect and engineer Vitruve. On the right hand part of the coin, a reversed writing paragraph (made to protect da Vinci’s inventions) is displayed. « 500 ans » evokes the passing away anniversary of Leonardo da Vinci. The face value is represented on the common reverse of the series.
